Star anise
Star anise is a dried flower in the shape of an eight-pointed star. It is a tasty herb with which dishes can be provided with a wonderful aroma. You can't eat star anise, it's too big for that. You could crush star anise to eat it and it is very suitable for making tea. As the name implies, it has an anise flavor. The star anise tree is native to North Vietnam, South China and parts of Asia, including the Moluccas. Star anise has been known in the west from about the 17th century.
Cooking tip
Most recipes assume whole star anise, not the powder. Cook a star anise in stews, stewed pears, tea eggs or edamame. The Chinese suck on a star anise (or probably just such a seed) for fresh breath. Can be stored for up to two years in a closed jar in a dark place.
